Fall webworm - macro photography

Fall webworm - macro photography

This set of macro photography is dedicated to the larval stage of the Fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea). At the end of its lifecycle this will become  a moth in the family Arctiidae but it is more popular for its larval stage, which creates the characteristic webbed nests on the tree limbs. In Italy this worm is known as Gatta Pelosa that literally means “hairy cat” or Processionaria from the Italian term for procession due to the habit of this specie to move around one behind the other in a long ordered queue.

This worm is native of the American continent and has been introduced in Europe and in Japan only between the 1940-45 probably arriving with the supply for the American Army involved in the second world war.

The main issue with this larva is that to survive could kill trees and plants where they nest their webs damaging plantations and wild vegetation.  For this reason the fall webworm has not a good reputation and is  usually fought with various technique including pesticides, nest destruction or some bacillus that can kill the larva at the early stages of its life.
